Baharampur




India officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the most populous liberal democracy in the world. India is a union of twenty-eight states and seven federally-governed union territories. New Delhi is the capital of India.
 
Baharampur  is one of the famous cities in India. Baharampur was founded and fortified in 1757 by the British East India Company and continued as a cantonment until 1870. The cantonment was constituted as a municipality in 1876. In 1857 the first major armed battle of the Indian Mutiny of 1857 took place in Baharampur. It has an average elevation of 18 meters.
 
The city is located approximately 200 kilometers north of Calcutta and is situated on the east side of the Bhagirathi River, a major distributary of the Ganges. The city’s industries include silk weaving, ivory carving, rice and oil-seed milling, and precious-metal working, Bell Metal from Khagra called Khagrai Kansha is fomus and special types of fried sweets called Khagrai Chanabora is also very papular. It is also a rail and road hub of the West Bengal state and is an important agricultural center.
 
As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Baharampur had a population of 160,168. Males constitute 51 percent of the population and females 49 percent. Baharampur has an average literacy rate of 79 percent, higher than the national average of 59.5 percent, with 53 percent of the males and 47 percent of females literate.
