Kovilpatti is a city and a municipality in Tuticorin and Toothukudi District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.  It is the second largest town in Tuticorin District in Tamil Nadu, India. It was the largest Taluk in terms of revenue villages in India but recently it was split into Ettayapuram and Kovilpatti Taluks. As of 2001 India census India, Kovilpatti had a population of 87,458.  It has an average elevation of 106 meters.
 
Kovilpatti is a fast growing town in Tuticorin District with commercial and industrial activities prominently. It is busting with Industrial activities with large number of Match factories, Textile mills and crackers factories. It is the gateway for entrants to Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts from north and west. It is located 100 kilometers south of Madurai city and 55 kilometers north of Tirunelveli Town and 60 kilometers north-west of Tuticorin. Kovilpatti is situated on the National Highway number 7 which connects, Varanasi in the North and Kanyakumari in the South. The town is situated at a height of approximately 658 meters from the MSL. It has a small hill to its south east known as Swarna Kathiresa Malai. The deity is Lord Muruga. Because of its height, the town is airy. 
 
Kovilpatti is well-known for its matchworks. Kovilpatti is famous for match works and fireworks, often called Matchless Town of Matches. It is the largest manufacturer of match boxes in India and it is second only to Sivakasi in the manufacture of fireworks.
 
Famous temple in the city is Shenbagavalli Amman Temple. Annarathna Match Industries, Aruna Match Works, Rose Matches, Comorin Match Industries,Swarna Match Factory Liberty Matches, Nagajothis International and East India Match Industries are some of the top companies in manufacturing Safety Matches in this town. It has a number of colleges that includes One engineering college and two polytechnic schools and three arts and science colleges.

As it is often regarded as among the most beautiful parts of India one of the most visited places amongst the most die-hard travelers the world over.
