India officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the most populous liberal democracy in the world. India is a union of twenty-eight states and seven federally-governed union territories. New Delhi is the capital of India.
 
Rishikesh is a city and a municipal board in Dehradun district in the Indian state of Uttaranchal. Rishikesh is a holy city for Hindus located in the foothills of the Himalaya in northern India. It is also known as the gateway to Himalayas and it located about 25 kilometers away from another holy city, Haridwar, and is considered an access point for the cities that form the Char Dham Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.
 
As of 2001 India census, Rishikesh had a population of 59,671 inhabitants. The males constitute 56 percent of the population and females 44 percent. Rishikesh has an average literacy rate of 75 percent, higher than the national average of 59.5 percent, male literacy is 80 percent, and female literacy is 68 percent. In Rishikesh, 12 percent of the population is under 6 years of age.

Rishikesh experiences a boom with day tourists, owing to the clear air, town character with rich culture, high quality of life and conspicuously original history. The picturesque scenery, the majesty of nature, the slow pace of life, and the welcoming nature of its people also combine to make this region one of the most important tourist attractions in India.
