Viluppuram is a city and a municipality in Viluppuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the headquarters of Villuppuram District. It is the Second largest District in the State which lies in the middle of the Tiruchirapalli to Chennai National Highways No. 45.It has a major junction well connected with the state. The main source of income is agriculture. The percentage of literacy was low until early 1980s but since then has had a constant improvement and now is around 75 percent.
 
Viluppuram had a population of 95,439. Males constitute 50 percent of the population and females 50 percent. Viluppuram has an average literacy rate of 79 percent, higher than the national average of 59.5 percent, male literacy is 84 percent, and female literacy is 73 percent. In Viluppuram, 10 percent of the population is under 6 years of age.
