Dhar
India officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the most populous liberal democracy in the world. India is a union of twenty-eight states and seven federally-governed union territories. New Delhi is the capital of India.
Dhar or the medieval historical town of Dhara Nagari is located in the Malwa region of western Madhya Pradesh state in central India. It is the administrative headquarters of Dhar District. The town is located 33 miles west of Mhow, 908 feet above sea level. It is picturesquely situated among lakes and trees surrounded by barren hills, and possesses, besides its old walls, many interesting buildings, both Hindu and Muslim, some of them containing records of a great historical importance.
The town, the name of which is usually derived from Dhara Nagari, the city of sword blades, is of great antiquity, and was made the capital of the Paramara chiefs of Malwa by Vairisimha II, who transferred his headquarters hither from Ujjain at the close of the 9th century.
According to the census of 1991 Dhar has a population of 13,67,412 persons. The district thus ranked twenty first in descending order of population among the then existing 45 districts, containing 2.07 percent of the population of Madhya Pradesh. The area of the district is 8,149 square kilometers. The area of the district is 1.84 percent of the area of the entire state of Madhya Pradesh. The census returned 49 mother-tongues languages or dialects. The places to visit are Mandav Mohankheda-Jain Tirth, Dhar Bagh Caves and Amjhera Badnawar.
