Japan is an island country in East Asia. Kashiwa is a municipality located in Chiba, Japan. In 2005, the population of the city was   382,957 and an area of 114.90 square kilometers. The city was founded on September 1, 1954, as a merger of townships in the area around the train station and current city center.
The centre of the city is dominated by the large multi-story station and the neighbouring Takashimaya department store. Through the Kashiwa International Relations Association, the city of Kashiwa maintains relationships with cities in China, Guam, and the continental United States. Since 1973, Kashiwa has been the sister city of the Los Angeles suburb of Torrance, California.
