Kurume is a municipality located in Fukuoka, Japan. In 2003, the population of the city was 306,140 and an area of 229.84 square kilometers. The city was founded on April 1, 1889. The Bridgestone Tire Corporation has its origins in Kurume as traditional footwear manufacturers, producing the sock-like shoe, used by farmers. Famous traditional products of Kurume are the kasuri, roughly woven indigo dyed cloth, pig-bone soup, ramen noodles and trays and bowls made from rantai shiki, a composite made from lacquered bamboo.
