Shamli has an average literacy rate of 64 percent, higher than the national average of 59.5 percent, male literacy is 70 percent and female literacy is 57 percent. In Shamli, 15 percent of the population is under 6 years of age.

Muzaffarnagar District is a district of Uttar Pradesh state in northern India. The district is part of Saharanpur Division. The town of Muzaffarnagar is the district headquarters. It is claimed to have the largest jaggery market in Asia.
