It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the most populous liberal democracy in the world. India is a union of twenty-eight states and seven federally-governed union territories. New Delhi is the capital of India.

Shimoga is the previous name of the place Shivamogga, a city in Karnataka. Shivamogga a town and a city municipal council, is located in the central part of the state of Karnataka, India. It lies on the banks of the Tunga River and is the administrative headquarters of the district.

The name of the city is derived from the term Shiva-Mukha, meaning Face of Shiva. An alternative etymology is that the name is derived from the term Sihi-Moge, meaning Sweet Pot. It has an average elevation of 569 metres. Shimoga is located about 274 kilometers from Bangalore and is an important industrial and commercial center of the state.

As of 2001 India census, Shimoga had a population of 274,105 inhabitants. The males constitute 51 percent of the population and females 49 percent. In Shimoga, 12 percent of the population is under 6 years of age.

Shimoga experiences a boom with day tourists, owing to the clear air, town character with rich culture, high quality of life and conspicuously original history. The picturesque scenery, the majesty of nature, the slow pace of life, and the welcoming nature of its people also combine to make this region one of the most important tourist attractions in India.
